The Muskegon County Veteran Affairs Council manages the park and all of the markers. In 2021, the tree markers and walkway plaques were mapped in coordination with a environmental restoration of the park. The initial inventory of the tree markers showed there were just over 100 trees with markers, after the GIS inventory and work in the park, a total of 187 were found, inventoried, and mapped. The walkway plaques were inventoried in a basic spreadsheet showing only the name of the veteran and the number of the walkway square it was located on. After a comprehensive inventory of all the walkway markers, there were a total of 4500 markers over the .7 miles of walkways throughout the park. Now family members and residents can search for honored veterans, see where in the park their marker is located and see a picture of the marker. The park adds about 30 new markers a year.

The Muskegon Veterans Causeway Memorial Park Maps were created by the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission’s GIS Program for The Muskegon County Veterans Affairs Office in Muskegon, Michigan. The online cemetery map is hosted by WMSRDC’s ESRI ArcOnline. All cemetery data and shapefiles are the property of The Muskegon County Veterans Affairs Office. Created in Fall 2022 and maintained by WMSRDC. To learn more about WMSRDC’s GIS Services visit www.WMSRDC.org

Veterans Memorial Park

Located between the cities of Muskegon and North Muskegon, The Causeway Veterans Memorial Park was once dubbed ‘Michigan’s Most Beautiful Mile’. This park is located next to Muskegon Lake and the mouth of the Muskegon River. Created in the early 1930’s, this park is dedicated to all the Muskegon County residents who have served in our Armed Forces. There are several large monuments and memorials, and a pair of World War I M1906 4.7-inch field guns. The park’s walkways line the north and south pond and span the Muskegon River. The walkways are lined with plaques dedicated to individual service people and include their name, branch of service, and dates of service. Meandering throughout the park are tree memorials with stones also dedicated to Muskegon’s Veterans.
