Riverton Township in Mason County, Michigan has two cemeteries, the larger Center Riverton Cemetery and the much smaller West Riverton Cemetery. These two cemeteries hold roughly 3,500 graves. These cemeteries have been maintained by the current township supervisor’s family. Much of the historical maps and data was created and preserved over their generations. The cemetery database was maintained on large note cards and arranged by the lot owners last names. Each card listed the location of the lots and its graves, the owner of the lot and the occupant of each grave. The cards contained mainly names with few dates, so there was a lot of data collection in the field for this project. The master database was created and the map layers for the cemetery’s blocks, lots, and graves. This project also requested photographs of all of the headstones, so these were collected along with the headstone data when the groundwork was performed in the cemetery.
